On Tuesday, it was revealed that the Trump organization finalized an agreement with Altus property developers to create a 91-story tower on the Gold Coast.
On that same day, Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate appeared on Triple M Gold Breakfast with Leisel Jones, Liam, and Spida from the USA to express his enthusiasm regarding the news.
This will be Australia’s inaugural Trump Tower… It’s truly remarkable; it’s about excellence. Adding the Trump name will elevate it immensely, and it will put the Gold Coast on the map for Americans.
When questioned if he had met President Donald Trump, Tate shared a positive memory of their initial encounter.
I had dinner with him and was struck by how stunning Melania is in person. Eric Trump is steering the development… He’s a sincere individual. [I dined] with Eric and Lara, who appears on Fox, he recounted.
When inquired about Trump’s personality, Tate described him as "very likable. "
He’s well-informed. He shook my hand and said, ‘Mr. Mayor, you’re warmly welcomed at our residence in Mar-a-Lago’, and suddenly it felt as if he recognized me.
Although the Gold Coast City Council has not yet received a development proposal, both Altus and Trump anticipate that the tower will be completed ahead of the Olympics.
Community members were quick to voice their concerns regarding the announcement when The Weekend Edition reported the story.
One commenter stated, "Can we focus on constructing affordable housing for Australian families rather than financing eyesores! "
Another raised doubts about those involved in the agreement, commenting, "Surely this is a poor decision; besides naming the tower after a convicted felon, the developer has faced bankruptcy several times… we don’t need our hardworking businesses entangled in this disaster. "
A petition titled Stop the Proposed Trump Tower Development on the Gold Coast was launched online on January 16, highlighting issues such as overdevelopment, environmental concerns, and strain on local infrastructure, in addition to a general unease within the community regarding the Trump brand and its connotations.
The Trump administration has implemented immigration policies and actions that a significant number of Australians consider inhumane, discriminatory, and fundamentally incompatible with democratic principles, the petition asserted.
Permitting a Trump-branded development on the Gold Coast would convey an inappropriate message about our community and what we are prepared to support.
The petition urged the Gold Coast City Council and the Queensland Government to reject any development proposals for a Trump-branded tower, guarantee authentic community engagement before endorsing significant developments, and prioritize projects that reflect Australian values of inclusivity and sustainability.
